Additive manufacturing with stimuli-responsive materials—4D printing—is a rapidly growing field, direct ink writing allowing deposition of wide variety materials. The synthesis humidity-sensitive cholesteric liquid crystal oligomer is reported. With the responsive ink, demonstrator devices exhibiting ink's “four dimensionality” are printed in disparate fashions: as structural color change or preprogrammed deformation mode. After printing, photonic changes response to atmospheric humidity, demonstrated hydrochromic coating precisely deposited atop 3D-printed beetle. activation aqueous acid, beetle exhibits vibrant shifts across visible spectrum. Alternatively, scallop-inspired actuator 3D-programmed selectively treated allow reversible “opening” and “closing” when exposed humid dry air, respectively. enables additive both monolithic multimaterial stimuli-responsive, shape-changing, structurally colored objects, toward broad application cholesterics future “smart,” 4D devices.
